What it does

Slows the enzyme involved in making pigment, so spots and overall tone look more even

Typical use level

About 1–2 g per 100 g

Watch out for

The EU's expert committee (SCCS) considered it safe up to 2% in face creams and 0.5% in body lotions
According to that committee's review, animal tests showed a weak potential to trigger allergic reactions, and there's no human data
Don't double up on arbutin in the same product
